Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police report initial examinations show the fluid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior political figure stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
