Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
