EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
