Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
