Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
